A little over 20 years ago, the Lake of the Ozarks Community Bridge was completed, as part of a project designed to benefit the community in a manner outlined by the 1990 Missouri Transportation Corporation Act. In the years since, the bridge has delivered on its promise to improve commerce and the overall community environment at The Lake. It does, however, carry with it a pesky little toll.
When Did The Toll Come About?
Having existed in some form since construction was completed, the toll has gone through changes in the past several years. In 2016, in response to a local business survey, the off-season reduced toll rates were lowered, so that locals would be able to commute to work with less of an impact, and other payment structures were rearranged to make it possible for the debt to be paid off more quickly.
When Will The Toll Go Away?
The bridge is currently under the purview of the Lake of the Ozarks Community Bridge Transportation Development District, who hope that the cost of construction debt will be paid off by 2026 or sooner, at which point the ownership will be transferred to the state. Once the debt is paid off and the bridge ownership transferred to the state, the toll will be eliminated.
The Community Bridge and You
Overall, the bridge has heralded local economic development and success, and is a compelling perk to living at The Lake—the east and west sides of the lake are easily connected, and the local economy is doing well.
